True crime shows have been around for about as long as anyone can remember, but it wasn’t until the proliferation of streaming services that the genre started to reach its true potential. Over the years, people with a Netflix subscription, those with a Peacock Premium subscription, and subscribers of other popular streaming platforms have been given access to amazing true crime documentaries, docudramas, and other specials about serial killers, cults, abuses of power, and even unexplainable phenomenon.
But with so many streaming services out there, it can sometimes be hard to decide on a true crime documentary or scripted series to watch. Well, we’re here to solve the case and provide some of the best options for true crime fans whether they have a Max subscription or access to any number of other popular services.
American Nightmare (2024)
The 2024 Netflix series, American Nightmare, spends three episodes diving into the story of Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn, a couple who found themselves at the center of a mysterious case strangely similar to Gillian Flynn’s 2012 crime thriller novel, Gone Girl. In the early hours of March 23, 2015, the couple was awoken by an intruder who kidnapped Huskins and dropped her off 400 miles away around 48 hours later.
What follows is a strange and twist-heavy case where the couple goes from being treated as victims to the perpetrators of a conspiracy to fake a kidnapping after investigators find holes in their stories. Hold your judgment until this whole story plays out…

Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God, a three-part HBO documentary series, was released in late 2023 and told the story of Amy Carlson, a former fast-food manager who became the leader of a mysterious new age religious movement. Love Has Won has all the staples of a great true crime doc in that it touches on cults, money-making schemes, and mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of its main subject.
This is up there with other cult documentaries HBO has released over the years, but that doesn’t mean it’s one you want to skip. In fact, this is something you have to see to believe.

Dark Side Of The Ring (2019 – Present)
Vice’s Dark Side of the Ring is technically a wrestling documentary series that dives into the lives and legacies of some of the sport’s biggest names and events, but it also spends a lot of time focusing on some of the most infamous scandals and full-on crimes committed by figures in the industry. The Chris Benoit murder-suicide, the mysterious death of Dino Bravo, the slaying of Bruiser Brody, and multiple other gripping stories are all explored throughout the series.
Part history lesson and part true crime documentary, Dark Side of the Ring sheds light on and breaks down tales that are so intense and seem so far-fetched that you’d think they were all part of some elaborate wrestling program.

McMillions (2020)
Released back in 2020, the HBO documentary series, McMillions turns its focus to the McDonald’s Monopoly fraud scandal and the wild ride investigators went on to get to the bottom of the story. Told over six episodes, this highly entertaining and insightful documentary introduces characters that feel like they’re out of a mob movie and not a promotion at one of the world’s most popular fast-food chains, and it only gets stranger as it goes on.
Expect to learn a lot about the scandal and all involved parties, as the documentary series throws so much information at you before everything is said and done.
Telemarketers (2023)
One of the most entertaining true crime documentaries out there, HBO’s 2023 three-parter, Telemarketers, feels a lot like a Michael Moore movie in that it’s at times so hilarious it makes you forget it’s uncovering a nefarious scheme. The basic gist of the series goes like this: two former coworkers go on a years-long campaign to expose the telemarketing industry that the documentary claims scammed people out of money in the name of charity.
It’s not as sinister or dramatic as some of the other shows on this list, but make no mistake, there’s some messed up stuff going on here. With a story that gets crazier as it goes on, an all-time documentary personality in Pat Pespas, and outstanding (albeit at times accidental) journalism, this is a must-watch.
A Friend of the Family (2022)
A Peacock original worth checking out, A Friend of the Family is an engrossing, terrifying, and at times maddening, true crime drama series based on the Abducted in Plain Sight documentary. The 2022 limited series tells the hard-to-believe story of Robert Berchtold (Jake Lacy), a man who kidnapped and abused Jan Broberg (Hendrix Yancey and McKenna Grace) on two different occasions in the mid 1970s.
What’s so upsetting about this nine-parter is the fact that Broberg’s parents, played by Colin Hanks and Anna Paquin, allow her abductor to remain a part of their close group of friends even after he kidnapped their young daughter the first time.

The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker (2023)

Who Killed Robert Wone? (2023)
The 2023 Peacock true crime docuseries Who Killed Robert Wone? is one of the more fascinating crime docs put out by the streamer over the years, and is definitely something fans of the genre need to check out. The basic premise goes like this: four men go to bed in a house one August 2006 night, only for one of them to be stabbed to death an hour later.
In a chat with CinemaBlend prior to the series debut, director Jared P. Scott revealed there were “a number of bizarre, perplexing, and baffling pieces” to the story that he felt made the story worth telling.
